What is the Grants-Milan Rotary Club?
Grants-Milan Rotary Club is a network of business leaders throughout Grants and Milan committed to improving our communities and businesses by speaking the truth, conducting ourselves fairly, building goodwill and better friendships, and benefiting all concerned.
How does the club achieve its mission?
The club meets at noon for lunch every Thursday at El Cafecito in Grants. These meetings allow the club to share its members' news and updates and serve as a networking platform. The club will discuss challenges that affect the community, and plan projects, programs and events that make Grants and Milan a better place. Additionally, speakers are invited to these meetings to help educate and connect members to resources from various professionals on a variety of topics.
The primary mission the club serves is managing and supporting The Backpack Program. Other projects and programs the club supports include:
-
Sponsorship of students to Camp RYLA
-
Pints for Polio
-
Community Thanksgiving Dinner
What is The Backpack Program?
The Backpack Program is a food assistance program designed to support elementary students in the Grants-Cibola County Schools (GCCS) district identified as "food insecure". Students identified by school councillors are provided a backpack filled with easy-to-make, nutritional foods on Fridays for those students to sustain themselves over the weekend.
In the early 2010's, the club was informed that the main meal many students receive in its area is breakfast and lunch at school. This meant many students struggle to feed themselves over the weekends. As a result, the Backpack Program was born, feeding 10's of students from a few elementary schools in the GCCS district.
The program now feeds 200+ students from all elementary schools in the GCCS district, costing roughly $30,000, every year.
The club raises these funds to support this program through events held throughout the year. These events include:
-
Ty Detmer Dinner (see more info below)
-
Ty Detmer Golf Tournament (see more info below)
-
Grants New Years Eve Dance

What is the Ty Detmer Dinner & Ty Detmer Golf Tournament?
These two events are fundraisers centered by the 1990 Heisman Trophy winner, Ty Detmer, who travels to Grants, NM once a year to host sports camps for youth throughout Cibola County.
The Ty Detmer Dinner is a reception for Ty and celebrity athletes that Ty recruits to welcome them to the Grants-Milan community. At this event, attendees meet Ty and his cadre, receive autographed photos, participate in a live auction of sports paraphernalia signed by athletic legends, and participate in other general raffles. The event serves dinner to the attendees and usually includes a cash bar.
The Ty Detmer Golf Tournament is an 18-hole golf tournament that invites teams to play for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place trophies. Individuals can also create a team with one of the visiting celebrity athletes for an additional fee. Contestants are provided lunch from the golf course clubhouse and a golf cart
